EP88: What It Means to Be Filipino: Prof. Felipe De Leon Jr. | Nick Joaquin, Amorsolo, NCCA, Kapwa

Felipe de Leon Jr. A renowned composer, educator, cultural advocate, and former chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), De Leon has spent decades championing a distinctly Filipino identity through music and the arts. Born into a family of artists, Felipe de Leon Jr. is the son of National Artist for Music Felipe Padilla de Leon, one of the country's greatest composers. His father is best known for timeless works such as Payapang Daigdig, Noli Me Tangere (the opera), and numerous compositions that reflected Filipino nationalism and cultural pride. Growing up under the influence of such a towering figure, Felipe de Leon Jr. inherited not only a passion for music but also a deep commitment to nation-building through culture. Following in his father's footsteps, De Leon established himself as one of the Philippines' leading composers. His body of work spans orchestral music, choral compositions, theater productions, film scores, and cultural pieces that celebrate the country's diverse traditions. Beyond composition, he has become one of the country's foremost voices on the importance of cultural identity, arguing that understanding Filipino culture is essential to understanding the nation itself. Throughout his career, De Leon has emphasized that Philippine arts should not merely imitate foreign influences but should reflect the experiences, values, and aspirations of the Filipino people. His advocacy extends beyond the concert hall, as he has actively worked with cultural institutions, artists, educators, and government agencies to strengthen arts education and preserve the country's cultural heritage. As chairman of the NCCA from 2010 to 2016, he helped advance programs that supported local artists, indigenous communities, and cultural preservation initiatives nationwide. His leadership reinforced the idea that culture is not just a reflection of society—it is a vital force in shaping national development. In this episode, we explore the life, music, and ideas of Felipe de Leon Jr.—a composer who continues to remind Filipinos that culture is not merely something we inherit, but something we actively create, nurture, and pass on to future generations.
