Are subtitles useful for learning Italian? Should you turn on subtitles, when learning Italian? Or instead watch Italian content without subtitles? Today I'd like to talk about subtitles (also known as captions). For example, let's say that you're a polyglot and want to learn the Italian language. Or let's just say that you're learning Italian as a second language. I mean: Italian is not your native language and you're learning Italian as a foreign language. And perhaps, when you watch content in Italian, you wonder whether it's more useful to watch it with subtitles on or without subtitles. By "content in Italian" I mean: movies, tv series, videos etc. Namely: there's this piece of video content, there're people talking and you can choose whether to turn subtitles on or not. The question is: are captions useful from the learning perspective? That is: watching a video with subtitles turned on, will you learn more? If you want to improve your Italian level, should you watch this content with or without subtitles? A more specific question could be: are subtitles useful, useless or harmful? Clearly, here I'm only referring to foreign language learning, in this case Italian. That is, in other words, what I'm about to say doesn't apply to Italian native speakers. I do hope my advice could help you improve your Italian. Many people may not care about learning Italian well. What I'm going to say doesn't apply to these people. Earlier I considered the example of a polyglot, because polyglots usually are passionate about language learning, so to speak. But it may also be the case that you want to learn Italian well, because you need to know it, because you need to relocate to Italy, or because you live in Italy, or because you need to know Italian well because of your job.
