Acadia's MOST REMOTE TRAIL & Feature you likely never heard of!!! THUNDER GULCH TRAIL - Isle au Haut

THUNDER GULCH TRAIL Thunder Gulch is an EXCLUSIVE Acadia experience... WHY? Besides the efforts to get to Isle au Haut that less than 7500 people make annually... A SMALL DETAIL... this "official park trail" isn't on the park map. NOT EVEN the Isle au Haut one... Why is this? How do you find it? Watch this video guide or read on to find out. This straightforward hike...~0.8 miles out, the same distance back - has plentiful birds, butterflies, grasshoppers, and other wildlife. The minimal hiking concerns on this trail are fallen trees, overgrown berries that scrape the legs & The Mail Boat schedule. The reward is seeing Thunder Gulch... a giant granite gash in the coast that waves roar into & echo a thunderous sound up to your ears like no other. If a picture is worth 1000 words...what's a video worth? *KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE TRAIL* see the Terrain, Trailheads, Views, and Intersecting Trails... NATURE!!! LIKE or SUBSCRIBE - I'd like for you to do either, I'd LOVE for you to do both! On the often-overlooked Isle au Haut's Acadia National Park trails is a feature that if, on Mount Desert Island, would rival Jordan Pond, Bubble Rock, Sand Beach, Bass Harbor Lighthouse & would dwarf the famous Thunder Hole! After driving an hour south, over a bridge, across a causeway & down to Deer Isle's southernmost port, Stonington, taking The Mail Boat ferry 45 minutes south to Isle au Haut is only the next step. Less than 7500 visitors get this far every year, AND if you do make it to Isle au Haut, knowledge becomes important. The expense and effort to get here can easily be thwarted by this rugged island outpost. Duck Harbor Mountain Trail, Ebens Head Trail & Cliff Trails are the way to go - easily 3 of the best park trails, accessible on a day trip... AND ON THE PARK PROVIDED MAP!!! but if on a mission to find something amazing & unique... Thunder Gulch is it. Located on the Eastern Ear, hiking ~5 miles diagonally southeast across the island from the Town Landing, CAREFULLY & RESPECTFULLY NAVIGATE ACROSS PRIVATE PROPERTY (this is likely the reason it's not on the map) to find yourself at the trailhead for this hike. The extraordinary effort to arrive here is rewarded with a solitary and pleasantly exclusive experience of Thunder Gulch. After descending the private Head Harbor road, a clearly marked path on private property leads to the trailhead. Fields of goldenrod lead to the trailhead. A brief rocky ascent leads to circumnavigation of the private property & crossing the park border. Here, the narrow trail ascends bordered by tall berries. The hike then progresses through fields and sparse trees with alternating borders of ferns, tall grass into patches of forest. Small sections of bog boards lead into a more forested area emerging into fields of tall grass & ferns and back into the woods preceeding a short climb up to an overview of Thunder Gulch. The trail then descends to the granite surrounding the gulch which can be carefully downclimbed for a closer look into the 20-30 yard deep chasm. I hope my efforts make your watching experience AND your next visit to ACADIA NATIONAL PARK ... wicked awesome! FRIENDLY REMINDER: no matter the difficulty, hiking has risks... HAVE A PLAN... the best times are had when planned properly. Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia... your hiking plan can include them as contingencies. Injuries can happen, let others know your planned route and timeframe... cell service is spotty in Acadia National Park. Remember: know your limits so you can push them, and DEFINITELY REMEMBER: what goes up must come down which includes you... AND if you enjoy the tour, your guide does accept likes, subscriptions and comments... (an option of leaving a tip: ie a link for actual tips through patreon is likely coming soonish). Be Safe! Live your purpose, change your world... Share your knowledge, change the world...
