ORANGE & BLACK PATH - What's the Right Way? 2 Parts! - Acadia National Park Hiking to/from Precipice
*ORANGE & BLACK PATH Video Guide* 2 different parts - go the right way to & from PRECIPICE TRAIL Reverted to its old name & pieced together ORANGE & BLACK PATH has 2 parts & 2 difficulties (& so this Guide is 2x as long) Know the right way & expect approaching difficulty! An escape or access to The Precipice!!! For those who PRECIPICE TRAIL is at their limit, taking its BRANCH on return from Champlain's summit may turn triumph into miserable struggle! If a picture is worth 1000 words... what's a video worth? *KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE TRAIL* see the Terrain, Trailheads, Views & Intersecting Trails... NATURE!!! LIKE or SUBSCRIBE - I'd like for you to do either, I'd LOVE for you to do both! ORANGE & BLACK PATH begins along SCHOONER HEAD PATH aside Schooner Head Road. Begin up stone steps into forest to Park Loop Rd traversing uneven granite before arriving. Crossing the road, terrain becomes more difficult & granite more uneven. Then climb slabs up Champlain Mountain to a talus fan w/stone steps alongside. At the talus, the trail splits. The main trail leads up steps & over uneven granite w/incredible views & a steep slab crux to CHAMPLAIN MOUNTAIN NORTH RIDGE TRAIL. Back down to O&B PATH, then following Park Loop Rd back to the Parking Area is an Acadia advised descent after Precipice. Down to the talus fan seems steeper on descent. Back at the talus, turn south along the east cliffs on the Branch. Formerly EAST FACE TRAIL it leads to PRECIPICE TRAIL. Using it to loop back to the parking adds difficulty & requires downclimbing iron rungs. As a bail out before the rungs get intense on PRECIPICE TRAIL & still having a good & difficult hike, albeit w/o a Precipice Summit of Champlain, is a best use of this Branch. Acadia's alternate route via Park Loop Road is best if in doubt. The Branch begins up steps & traverses cliffside as intensity increases. Hands & care are required for balance as arrival at a tight staircase down a granite seam precedes the most intense part. Below the stairs a narrow path leads to downclimbing uneven granite, more steps & more intense climbing along a granite cliff face. Arrival at wood tiered & stone steps announces the end of the most difficult. A cliffside warning sign announces PRECIPICE TRAIL w/trailhead soon after. Here, descent to Precipice Parking is now quicker (but not by much) than retracing across the cliff once more but does require downclimb of iron rungs. I would advocate for use of Park Loop Rd if approaching or at your limit. I hope my efforts make your watching experience AND your next visit to ACADIA NATIONAL PARK ... wicked awesome!
