Tala Vadya Laya Sangamam | Mallari

"Mallari signals the commencement of worship in a temple—the Nadaswaram and Tavil announce the deity's procession, always in Gambeera Nattai, the pentatonic raga that evokes Veera rasa and the majestic bearing of the Lord adorned and borne forth. Team Parampara presented Tala Vadya Laya Sangamam at Bekal Gokulam Goushala in Periya, Alakode, Kasargod, Kerala, the ensemble rooted in the sacred pulse of rhythm and the convergence of percussion, melody, and devotion. Though individual artists are not named, the collective weaving of mridangam, ghatam, kanjira, and morsing spoke as one voice, each instrument a thread in the fabric of laya. Mallari, composed by Nikshith Puttur, was rendered in raga Gambeera Nattai and Adi thala. Gambeera Nattai is a pentatonic audava raga omitting rishabham and dhaivatam—the five swaras that remain carry gravity and breadth known to temple tradition, the Gambheeryam or majestic appearance evoked as the Lord moves through the assembly. Adi thala, the eight-beat cycle of clarity and strength, held the composition's architecture. Nikshith Puttur's Mallari honours the centuries-old Nadaswaram repertoire, now brought to life through layered percussive textures.
