Endaro Mahanubhavulu | Ranjani-Gayatri | Tyagaraja's Path to Liberation Through Music
"There are many great souls; I bow to them all." Filmed live at the Barbican Centre, London, the virtuoso sisters Ranjani and Gayatri—among the finest Carnatic musicians alive—present a sacred performance dedicated to the life and work of Sadguru Sri Tyagaraja Swami. Endaro Mahanubhavulu is the fifth and last of Tyagaraja's Pancharatna Kritis (five jewels). Set in the grand Raga Sri, this masterpiece stands as a universal salute to saints, devotees, and musicians across time. It is a philosophical declaration that greatness is everywhere and that the highest act available to a human being is humility before the mystery of life. In this performance, Ranjani and Gayatri are joined by ten singers from the UK in collective song, evoking the essence of Aradhana—music offered as a shared act of devotion. Translation Lyrics and word-by-word meanings by Ramesh Panchagnula. About the Project This concert celebrates Sadguru Sri Tyagaraja Swami (1767–1847), a social radical who refused royal patronage and gold to maintain his spiritual independence. He composed in Telugu, the language of ordinary people, believing that sincere devotion transcended ritual and was available to everyone regardless of status. His practice of ekagrata (one-pointedness) and santosha (contentment) stands as a countercultural antidote to our modern era of fragmented attention.
