Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer | RARE & UNHEARD concert, Jagannatha Bhaktha Sabha, Veda Vilas Hall, 1957

In the fading glow of an evening in Madras, the grand halls of the Museum Theatre complex slowly filled with anticipation. Outside, Egmore moved at its unhurried 1950s pace, tram bells in the distance, jasmine in the air, and rasikas gathering in crisp veshtis and starched cotton sarees as they entered the storied Veda Vilas Hall for an evening under the auspices of the Jagannatha Bhaktha Sabha. On stage sat a titan. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, at the height of his powers, flanked by the incomparable TN Krishnan, the deeply aesthetic accompaniment of Vellore Ramabhadran, and the rich tonal support of Madurai Krishna Iyengar. Together, they shaped an evening that now survives as a rare sonic time capsule from 1957. This is not merely the documentation of a concert, but the preservation of an entire musical ecosystem that once stood at the very heart of Carnatic music in Madras. The Jagannatha Bhaktha Sabha of Egmore was no ordinary sabha, it was among the most respected and exacting musical institutions of its time, a space where reputations were forged, careers were launched, and standards of classicism were fiercely upheld. Functioning from the famed Veda Vilas on Egmore High Road, the Sabha nurtured and presented generations of giants, including the debuts of Brinda-Muktha, Palghat Mani Iyer, Palani Subramania Pillai, the Alathur Brothers, and even a young Balamuralikrishna. To earn the approval of its audience was considered a badge of the highest artistic legitimacy. The atmosphere of that world is almost tangible through this recording itself. One can hear the acoustics of old Madras sabhas, the natural reverberation of a large hall, the occasional shifting of an audience member, and the raw immediacy of analogue tape preserving every nuance without ornamentation. Semmangudi’s voice carries extraordinary depth and authority, while TN Krishnan’s replies shimmer with restraint and precision, anchored throughout by Ramabhadran’s understated mastery. This recording captures far more than an evening of music. It preserves the soundscape of a vanished Madras, an era when music was treated not merely as performance, but as sacred intellectual and aesthetic pursuit. The microphone here does not intrude; it simply bears witness to history. Vaak is deeply honoured to present this rare and largely unheard archival concert in its entirety. It then ends abruptly during the tani avarthanam at around the 3-hour mark, suggesting that there may not have been an additional spool available to continue recording the remainder of the concert. This initiative aims to archive and present complete Carnatic music concerts, carefully selected from Vaak’s archives and restored for an immersive listening experience. These recordings are shared for non-commercial, educational, and research purposes. Our goal is to support students, rasikas, and lifelong learners by improving access to rare and historically significant material that is often difficult to find, especially within India. We also digitally restore and enhance archival images of artists using AI tools, followed by careful manual refinement. Most available photographs from the 1950s and 60s are low-resolution or deteriorated, this process helps bring them closer to how these artists may have appeared in performance, while preserving their original likeness and integrity. This is an ongoing effort to revive, preserve, and make accessible India’s rich musical heritage.
