2026/04 • The Problem with Reclaimed Beams | Setting Up a Homestead Weather Station
Not every piece of reclaimed wood can be saved. Today, a hidden problem changes the plans for the homestead. Welcome back to Evolving Acres. In this episode, the atmosphere in the village is quiet, moody, and overcast after a heavy rainfall. The day begins by clearing a few young trees that have bent completely to the ground, heavy under the weight of wet leaves and fresh spring blossoms. With the path cleared, the main task was to transport our heavy, reclaimed beams into the newly finished storage shed using a custom-built two-wheeled hand truck. However, after moving the first few timbers, the reality of working with old wood set in: the rot inside the beams was much worse than expected. Plans had to change—the bad timber will be split for firewood, while only the best pieces will make it inside. Pivoting from the setback, I shifted focus to a new infrastructure project. By digging a deep post hole, adding a gravel base for drainage, and raising one of our solid beams into a perfectly level vertical position, the foundation was set. Around it, the earth is packed down until it's rock-solid to support a brand-new addition to the land: the homestead weather station. Thank you for watching the honest, slow evolution of this land.
