2026/02 • The Storm vs. My Temporary Roof | Silent Homesteading

Building is only half the battle. Defending it from the elements is where the real challenge begins. Welcome back to Evolving Acres. In this episode, winter seems to have arrived early in the village. The weather turned cold, harsh, and unforgiving, bringing relentless wind and rain right as the framing of the storage shed was completed. With the main structure vulnerable to the weather, my immediate priority was to pull a heavy tarp over the roof to keep the reclaimed timber dry. Initially, I tried securing it traditionally with ropes and tension. But as the storm rolled in, the wind quickly proved too strong—the ropes began to slip, the knots failed, and the wind took control. After a rough first night of severe weather, the tarp suffered under the pressure, leaving holes and leaks. To save the structure, I had to pivot and use a more permanent method, securing the tarp directly with screws to hold it against the gale. It’s a cold, wet, and challenging week on the land. Will this temporary fix hold through the coming storms, or will the wind win the battle? Thank you for watching the honest reality of building a homestead.
