Mary, the second, was contemplative, devout, and reflective. Lazarus, the only brother, was loved by his sisters. They lived together in a modest but welcoming family home. Martha was the head of the household; she cooked, cleaned, organized, and worked constantly. A rabbi from Nazareth named Jesus frequently visited Jerusalem for festivals. Bethany was the perfect place to rest. Jesus came to her house for the first time. From that day on, he visited regularly, and they became close friends. Martha's house in Bethany was a refuge for Jesus, a place where he could rest, eat, and be with friends. 🙏 "MARTHA, MARTHA" One day Jesus arrived with twelve disciples, thirteen men, all hungry. Martha frantically began preparing food for everyone. Kneading bread, preparing fish, chopping vegetables, serving water, working alone, sweating, stressed, frustrated. Mary sat at Jesus' feet as a disciple, listening to his teachings. Martha's frustration grew. She left the kitchen. "Lord! Don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" Jesus looked at Martha with loving compassion. "Martha, Martha. You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." These words pierced Martha's heart. Jesus wasn't rejecting her service, but teaching her balance: service without anxiety, work without excessive worry, presence, not just activity. Martha learned that one can serve and be present, work and maintain inner peace, not choosing between action and contemplation, but having both. 💀 LAZARUS SICK Months later, Lazarus fell ill with a fever, cough, and a weakening body. Martha and Mary cared for him day and night, worried. They sent an urgent message to Jesus, who was in Perea. "Lord, the one you love is sick." They expected Jesus to come immediately, but a day passed, and Jesus did not arrive. A second day passed, and still he did not arrive. Lazarus worsened every hour: labored breathing, burning skin. On the third day, his condition was critical, barely conscious, breathing weakly. "Where is Jesus? Why isn't he coming?" On the night of the third day, Lazarus worsened dramatically. Irregular breathing, long pauses. Lazarus briefly opened his eyes, looked at his sisters with love, and tried to smile. Then he closed his eyes. He exhaled a long, final breath. And he breathed no more. Lazarus had died. They prepared his body according to Jewish custom: they washed it, anointed it with spices, and wrapped it in linen bandages.
