However, it's a place where doctors can express the gratitude they've forgotten in their daily lives, and patients can regain their physical and mental health. The miracle of feeding 5,000 people with five barley loaves and two fish is a daily occurrence, a place of true love and true humanitarianism. ■ Joseph Clinic, a ray of light in a low, shadowy shantytown Yeongdeungpo's bustling downtown area shines with the footsteps of shoppers and vibrant neon signs at the end of the year. Just a few steps away, down an alley, you'll find the blue shack roofs of Yeongdeungpo's shantytown, home to some 600 households. A dark room, barely enough for one person to lie down, where each person lives in solitude. For those who had nowhere else to go after a hard day's work, a place of healing arose some 20 years ago. Joseph's Clinic, a free hospital, charges no fees, and even charges 60 volunteers and 20 medical staff members a fee. Residents who didn't even have health insurance come here for free treatment, a slice of bread, and a simple greeting, brightening their days. The faces of the volunteers, who share their love with patients, are adorned with smiles. In a season when the bitter winds chill our bodies, we explore the reason this winter is so cold through the 72 hours of the Joseph's Clinic residents. Actress Shin Ae-ra, currently pursuing a doctorate in Christian education in California, served as the narrator during a brief visit to Korea. ■ A Miracle in a Jjokbangchon: Sharing Joseph Clinic began in 1987 as a run-down hospital, opened by Director Seonwoo Kyung-sik on the second floor of a market building in Sillim-dong. Due to the harsh conditions, medicine had to be imported from overseas, and used needles had to be sterilized after each use. The hospital's financial difficulties were a constant source of worry. But then, miracles struck. Someone donated ramen, and when medical supplies were lacking, a helping hand came from somewhere. In moments of crisis, anonymous small donations and volunteer work continued, allowing Joseph Clinic to build a miraculous 29 years. The miracle of feeding 5,000 people with five barley loaves and two fish may not be unique to the Bible. Hospital staff often say, "We were always short, but we were always full." Joseph Clinic's unique record, built on the miracle of sharing, is the result of over 8,000 supporters and over 600,000 free medical treatments over 29 years. ■ Medical Volunteers Caring for Patients with True Integrity At 1 p.m., when the hospital doors open, approximately 27 volunteers, both general and medical, begin their work at Joseph Clinic. A total of 23 departments are open from daytime to night. The evening clinic, held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., draws even more visitors from other hospitals, making the hospital even busier. ■ Our Neighbors Visiting Joseph Clinic Shin Yu-byeong, who had been feeling unwell for a month or two, visited Joseph Clinic. He had postponed treatment due to financial constraints, but suddenly developed ascites. The diagnosis revealed he needed to be transferred to a general hospital. Concerns about the cost briefly clouded his face, but his face finally brightened when he learned that Joseph Clinic patients, even those transferred, were free of charge.
