Part 1: A Perfect Day Through video records in which the production team stayed at a hospice hospital for approximately five months from spring to autumn 2023 to observe ‘hospice and the people within it,’ the program reveals the necessary role of modern medicine for those facing death and the perspectives of our society. Public perception of hospice is as follows. It is often described as “a place that does nothing,” “a place to die,” “a place to wrap up life,” or “a sad and dark place.” However, that perception is fundamentally wrong. Hospice is a place to “live well.” Rather, it is a place where terminally ill patients, exhausted by the endless treatments and improvements of hospitals and nursing facilities, go to “live authentically.” In the face of terminal illness, it is not easy for a patient to preserve the life they have cherished and loved. To this end, hospice medical staff, as well as patients and their caregivers, constantly fear, worry, discuss, and struggle in the face of the word “death.” This documentary aims to explore these central questions together. Through the lens of a “hospice hospital,” this documentary examines the keywords of “the human condition,” “a life worthy of a human being,” and “subjectivity in life”—concepts that our society and modern medicine are overlooking at the end of life. “What is truly needed for a person standing at the end of life, tormented by the pain of illness?” “What is it that makes a human being truly human in the face of dying and death, and what makes someone’s ‘perfect day’ possible?” Part 3: Fearing Aging More Than Dying We covered the groundbreaking changes in Japanese and American nursing facilities known as “free-range care” as an alternative to change the tragedy of Korean nursing facilities. “Free-range care” refers to a form of care that helps the elderly do “what they can do on their own,” rather than the type of care where the elderly are confined to facilities resembling chicken coops and herded around by caregivers like sheepdogs. In other words, there is no force-feeding, no forced bathing, and no confinement with restraint devices. It ensures that even elderly people suffering from dementia do not lose the freedom they naturally enjoyed as human beings, such as walking freely around the neighborhood or traveling with their families. "Kinmokusei," a Japanese nursing facility that most actively practices this "free-range care," delivered a refreshing shock to viewers. In particular, the fact that this facility resolves the issues of dementia patients running away and wandering—which frequently occur in Korea as well—through a completely unexpected method resonated deeply. Unlike Korean nursing facilities, which lock doors or install locks on elevator buttons to prevent dementia patients from running away, at Kinmokusei, if a dementia patient who wants to go home runs off and leaves the facility, care staff secretly follow them and strike up a conversation under the guise of a coincidence. "It's cold; would you like to come back to the facility to get your coat?" or "You must be thirsty; would you like to have a glass of water before you go home?" The philosophy behind Kinmokusei's "free-range care" is that by repeatedly providing care that respects the elderly—even if it is inconvenient—the dementia patient gains a sense of stability, and they gradually come to accept the facility as a space.
