Joseph Clinic was first established in 1987 in a shantytown in Sillim-dong. Due to redevelopment, it relocated to its current location in Yeongdeungpo Jjokbangchon in 1997. The jjokbangchon, crammed together like a honeycomb along narrow alleys, is currently home to approximately 400 people. Many suffer from chronic conditions like alcoholism, diabetes, and high blood pressure, as they soothe their loneliness with alcohol in cramped spaces where they can barely move. Since its opening, Joseph Clinic has relied on countless volunteer medical staff to uphold its mission of "providing the best free medical care for poor patients." And even during the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, the clinic has continued its free medical services after a single closure. What is it that has enabled Joseph Clinic to survive in this jjokbangchon for 35 years? The late Dr. Seonwoo Kyung-sik, founder and first director of Joseph Clinic, left behind the secure career of a university professor to devote his life to poor patients. Emphasizing that "the patient who can do nothing for the doctor is the one who truly needs the doctor," he remained at his clinic through rain and shine. He even continued to provide care while battling cancer and stroke, reportedly remaining at his clinic until four days before his death. Following Dr. Seonwoo Kyung-sik's passing, his second director, Dr. Shin Wan-sik, took up the practice's medical service. He too has followed a similar path. Leaving behind his reputation as Korea's leading authority on infectious diseases, he has continued his unpaid medical service at Joseph Clinic for 13 years. He is also joined by Dr. Kim Jeong-sik, a dentist who began his medical service with Dr. Seonwoo Kyung-sik in 1987 and has continued his service for 35 years. The touching stories of these doctors, often called the "Schweitzers of the Jjokbang Village," are revealed through the lens of renowned figures. The 114 doctors, including Director Shin Wan-sik, volunteer at Joseph's Hospital. Who are they? Some rush to the shantytown after a busy day as university professors, others temporarily close their own hospitals to come, and even some trauma surgeons who have just completed emergency surgery on traffic accident patients or come from the countryside after brain tumor surgery. They say they can't easily quit once they begin volunteering at Joseph's Hospital, with some working for as long as 35 years, others as short as a few. Initially, they were terrified by the stench and the drunken patients. But as time passed, some patients bowed in gratitude for their lives, while others left thank-you notes under the hospital door. The reward for helping patients is immense. They all unanimously agree that they're doing their job, not just volunteering.
