Why is the U.S. Negotiating a Minerals Agreement with the DRC | Mapping Minerals Diplomacy
As conflict intensifies between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwandan-backed M23 rebels, DRC President Félix Tshisekedi is offering U.S. access to critical mineral resources—including cobalt and copper—in exchange for security assistance. Following a June 27 peace agreement, momentum is building around U.S.–DRC cooperation on critical minerals. In this episode, CSIS's Gracelin Baskaran is joined by Guy Robert Lukama, Chairman of Gécamines (the DRC’s state-owned mining company), to break down: • Why the DRC is key to global mineral security • What the U.S. stands to gain from deeper engagement • The challenges of attracting responsible investment in a high-risk environment --------------------------------------------- A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world.
