Minister Biruta questions balance in U.S. approach to Rwanda-DRC peace deal

Rwanda’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Vincent Biruta, has expressed concern over what he described as a “lack of balance” in the approach to implementing the US-brokered peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Speaking during a fireside chat at the Aspen Security Forum 2026, held from July 14 to 17, Dr. Biruta said Rwanda remains committed to the Washington Accords for Peace and Prosperity, but expects all parties involved to fulfill their obligations under the agreement. The Minister discussed Rwanda’s security concerns linked to the FDLR armed group, the situation in eastern DRC, the role of international mediation, regional stability, and Rwanda’s relationship with global partners.
