Why is Australia crucial in countering China’s mineral dominance? | Mapping Minerals Diplomacy
Australia is an indispensable partner to the United States for building resilient, secure supply chains. It is home to 43 of the 55 U.S.-designated critical minerals and it’s long been a minerals powerhouse, with the sector contributing to 14% of Australia’s GDP (compared to 1.3% in the U.S). Backed by world-class expertise and capital markets, strengthening US-Australia minerals diplomacy will be key to countering China’s dominance. In this episode, CSIS’s Gracelin is joined by the Honorable Kevin Rudd, Australia’s 26th Prime Minister and current Australian Ambassador to the United States to discuss: How is Australia positioning itself to compete in midstream processing, given China’s dominance in refining capacity? How is the Australian government looking to use market support tools, like price floors and the newly announced strategic reserve? With frameworks like AUKUS and Australia’s designation as a Defense Production Act (DPA) partner, what does meaningful U.S.–Australia cooperation on critical minerals look like? --------------------------------------------- A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world.
