A historic road that flourished as a cotton trading center The Hirata region, located northeast of the Izumo Plain, has long flourished as a market town, thanks to the distribution of goods via waterways from the west shore of Lake Shinji. From the Edo period through the Meiji period, it flourished as a distribution center for Unshu cotton, and is a nostalgic town lined with gabled, lacquered townhouses. The name "Cotton Highway" was coined in 2001. The areas around Shinmachi, Kataharamachi, and Miyanomachi are home to many long-established businesses that retain traditional buildings and culture reminiscent of the days when the area prospered through cotton trading. As a result, the residents themselves named the area "Cotton Highway" and began proactive town development.
