This is a video of a stroll through an old townscape that remains in the Reiwa era. Please take a look if you're interested. For this old townscape walk, we'll be walking through the Ashimori Townscape Preservation District in Ashimori, Kita-ku, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture. Ashimori Townscape Preservation District, Ashimori, Kita Ward, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture Ashimori's townscape, lined with jinya-machi (townhouses) and townhouses, still retains the atmosphere of the Edo period. The area to the north, where Kinsui-en Garden and an elementary school are now located, was once the site of the Ashimori domain's jinya (former residence) and samurai residences. Additionally, Ashimori's townscape is formed by a wide row of townhouses, with the Ashimori Historical Communication Street running north to south as the border. The precious castle town scenery that was rapidly lost after the Meiji period still remains strong today, and with many historical and cultural documents, the area was designated a prefectural townscape preservation district in August 1990. Rice Storehouse Gallery This facility, located adjacent to Ashimori Plaza, is a renovated Meiji-era rice storehouse that can be rented out for exhibitions, mini-concerts, and more. The garden in front of the rice storehouse was beautiful. Ashimori Plaza This interactive tourist facility, featuring pottery and other arts, is beloved by locals and tourists alike as a base for disseminating tourist information about Ashimori and the Kibiji region, and a hub for cultural exchange. The tiled-roofed building blends seamlessly into the historic Jinyamachi landscape, and there's also a restaurant serving local ingredients. Bitchu Ashimori Townscape Hall The Bitchu Ashimori Townscape Hall is a former merchant's house that was once located here. It has undergone extensive renovations, including reconstruction, while preserving its original appearance in an architectural style reminiscent of Edo-period buildings. It now serves as Ashimori's tourist information center. Former Ashimori Merchant House, Fujita Sennichi Residence The Fujita Sennichi Residence, a former Ashimori merchant house, was developed by Okayama City and is open to the public as a museum for learning about the history of Ashimori. The building was constructed at the end of the Edo period and, after the Meiji period, was remodeled into a grand structure with a two-story tiled hip-and-gable roof and plastered walls, preserving the atmosphere of a typical Ashimori merchant house from that time.
