This Friday, sixteen days after the twin earthquakes of June 24, residents of the Caribe residential area broke their silence to denounce government neglect and compare the current situation to the 1999 mudslide. "What happened in '99 was nothing compared to this," declared the victims of the Ritasol Palace complex, explaining that the tragedy at the end of the last century affected specific, localized areas, while this 2026 earthquake has completely devastated the coastline, leaving between 400 and 500 buildings collapsed or severely damaged from Tanaguarena and Macuto to Catia La Mar. The residents of the Caribe sector report that the rescue and recovery efforts are being carried out entirely through community self-management, with family members having to pay for their own transportation, water, and even the rental of two pieces of light machinery thanks to a donation from a neighbor.
