We Didn’t Feel Safe Anymore (Midnight Camp Escape)

We spent the day exploring backroads and scouting potential campsites deep in the Willapa Hills, searching for that perfect remote spot. After hours of driving, we finally found it — a quiet lakeside campsite with not another person around for miles. It felt like the ideal place to settle in for the night. We set up camp out of our Toyota Tacoma and popped open our FSR Kali King rooftop tent. With camp dialed, we kicked back, enjoyed the peace and quiet, and cooked up a well-earned dinner of steaks and mashed potatoes as the sun went down. Everything about the evening felt calm, remote, and exactly why we love getting out here. But around midnight, things took a turn. Out of nowhere, a car came flying down the road and pulled in right next to our campsite. Two guys jumped out, moving around in the dark. We weren’t sure what they were doing, and after a few tense minutes, they got back in and drove off. Then, we noticed another vehicle sitting quietly down the driveway with its lights off. ????? That was enough for us.... The vibe had completely changed, and we knew we wouldn’t sleep a minute feeling that exposed and uneasy. Trusting our instincts, we made the call to pack everything up in the middle of the night and head home. Not every remote camping trip goes as planned — and sometimes the best decision is knowing when it’s time to leave. Sketchy night in the Willapa Hills… but always an adventure.
