北野天満宮とその主祭神の菅原道真公は、古来日本人の世界観を表している。 すなわち、菅原道真公は歴史上の人物であるが、人もまた神であり、 また、天満宮に祀られている神々は、国津神や天津神ばかりでなく、道真公の家臣、親族、天皇、皇族、はては松の木や杉の木など自然物であり、 天・地・人の万物は神であること、 したがって、全てのものは尊ばれ敬われる存在であること、という縄文時代から日本人が長らく育んできた世界観や価値観、考え方や意識を体現している。 Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and its principal deity, Sugawara no Michizane, embody the worldview that the Japanese people have long cultivated—dating back to the Jomon period. This worldview holds that while Michizane was a historical figure, he is also a deity; furthermore, the deities enshrined at Tenmangu include not only Kunitsukami (earthly deities) and Amatsukami (heavenly deities), but also Michizane’s retainers and relatives, emperors and members of the imperial family, and even elements of nature such as pine and cedar trees— reflecting the belief that all things in heaven, on earth, and among humanity are divine, and that, consequently, every entity is a being worthy of reverence and respect.
