(Kyoto)

Kurama-dera’s Oku-no-in (Inner Sanctuary) houses an Iwakura (sacred rock seat) and an Iwasaka (sacred stone enclosure)—sites where the Ascended Master Sanat Kumara is said to have descended over ten million years ago. An Iwasaka is a sacred space or ritual site—demarcated by stones—used in ancient Japan to welcome and worship kami (Shinto deities). It signifies the boundary separating the sacred realm (a purified area) from the mundane world and serves as a yorishiro (a vessel or medium) for the deity to descend into during rituals. While an Iwasaka refers to the "space or ritual site" used to invite the deity, the term Iwakura is used to distinguish the specific rock or boulder itself where the deity actually resides or is enshrined. Iwasaka are considered a "primordial form of Shinto"—predating the construction of modern shrine buildings—and preserve the ancient traditions of megalithic and nature worship. Examples of these sites can still be found among the remains of ancient ritual grounds at shrines across Japan. Also featured here are the Fudo-do Hall (dedicated to Fudo Myoo) at Sojo-ga-dani, where Minamoto no Yoshitsune (known in his youth as Ushiwakamaru) is said to have trained with tengu*; the Yoshitsune-do Hall, where Yoshitsune himself is enshrined; and the *Kenzoku-sha (Shrine of Divine Attendants), dedicated to the spiritual emissaries of the gods and Buddhas—such as *tengu*, dragons, snakes, foxes, and the three-legged crow, *Yatagarasu*.
