WWII Japanese Ohka “Baka” Rocket powered Kamikaze Bomb, Navy's Response and Why They failed
During WWII, in April 1945 the Japanese started attacking Allied ships with a rocket powered bomb called the Baka. It needed to be released from a Betty bomber mother ship 20 to 25 miles from the ship tack force. Over 755 of these bombs were produced, 50 or so were released, 13 were seen by the ships, 9 of the 13 missed, 4 struck ships, and sunk 1 ship. All 4 hits were destroyers, on Picket duty off Okinawa. The program was considered a failure. The main reason was the vulnerability of the Betty bomber mother ships. They needed to get within 20 to 25 miles miles of the task force. They were slow and extremely vulnerable to CAP. Only a fraction of Bakas launched were within range. Also, once launched and within range, the Bakas were difficult to accurately control and maneuver. This was due to their high speed, high wing loading, and small control surfaces. They often failed to hit a ship, even if not engaged by the ships AA fire.
