How to accelerate the growth of surfinias and other petunias? 🌼 What can you do to ensure they bloom beautifully and abundantly all season long? 🌼 That's the topic of today's video from the "Balconies and Terraces" series. Enjoy! Surfinias and petunias have been among the most popular balcony plants for years. They became even more popular when supertunias appeared on store shelves. The multitude of different petunia varieties, including trailing, cascading surfinias, is incredible. They all delight with cascades of colorful flowers, grow quickly, and often bloom until the first frost. However, to truly look spectacular all season long, they need proper care. Many people make a few simple mistakes that cause the plants to weaken, stretch, or stop blooming profusely in mid-summer. So how can you accelerate the growth of surfinias and keep them thick, healthy, and full of flowers? Here are the most important rules. Choose the right location for these plants. Surfinias and other petunias love the sun. The more light they receive, the faster they will grow and the more abundantly they will bloom. The minimum amount of light is approximately 6 hours of full sun per day. In the shade, the plants will be elongated, less compact, and flower less abundantly. It's also worth remembering that surfinias don't like strong, cold winds. In very drafty balconies, they can dry out more quickly and break off their stems. Since they love sunny locations, it's essential to water them regularly. Surfinias are sensitive to drying out and overwatering. On hot days, they need to be watered even twice a day with a watering can, especially if they've already grown and are planted in relatively small containers. They dry out even more quickly in hanging pots. Therefore, if you know you won't be able to visit your surfinias often and want them on your balcony or patio, it's worth planting them in larger pots, such as tall containers, where they'll have more soil and will last longer. This brings us to another important issue: the soil. Surfinias and petunias require fertile and well-drained soil. They will thrive in commercially available potting mixes for balcony or flowering plants, or in general-purpose soil. Remember that containers for these plants should always have drainage holes at the bottom; otherwise, the roots may rot and the surfinias will die completely. They shouldn't be standing in water. Regular fertilization is also crucial for surfinias and petunias. This is essential. These plants are true gluttons. They grow very vigorously and quickly deplete nutrients from the soil. To supplement these nutrients, you can use a liquid fertilizer for surfinias, which has a carefully balanced ratio of macro- and micronutrients specifically for these plants, helping them continuously produce new growth and develop new flower buds. It can be applied by watering or as a foliar spray, dissolving approximately 1/3 of the cap in 1 liter of water. This type of fertilizer is recommended to be used approximately three times a week. Shake the bottle before use. To ensure your surfinias grow quickly and beautifully, it's also important to choose the right seedling from the very beginning. These plants can be grown from seed, but we usually buy them from garden centers already grown and flowering. Choose compact plants with plenty of buds and dark green leaves. Look for mold or other signs of fungal diseases, especially if the seedlings are additionally wrapped in plastic. It's also worth remembering that different varieties of petunias and surfinias can have different growth habit and rates. In this case, some may grow faster and others slower. Varieties also differ in seed setting. There are so-called self-cleaning varieties, which don't set seed, and varieties that set seed after flowering. In the latter, it's worth occasionally removing spent flowers. This way, the plants don't waste energy on seed setting and can focus on growth and the next flowering season. To encourage these plants to grow and become bushier, you can also prune them occasionally or pinch off the top of the shoots here and there. Surfinias respond very well to pruning, producing more new, young, flowering shoots. This treatment is especially useful if your seedling has few, relatively long shoots...
