Why don't surfinias and other petunias or supertunias bloom as we'd like? What can we do to ensure they remain stunning all summer long? That's the topic of today's video from the "Balconies and Terraces" series. Enjoy! Surfinias, petunias, and supertunias are such a diverse group of plants that they've already become a permanent fixture on our balconies and terraces. Everyone will find a variety they like among these magnificent flowering plants. Abundantly blooming, often with cascades of flowers, they look like colorful clouds from afar, especially when planted in hanging containers. And everyone who plants these plants hopes to admire such a colorful floral cloud all summer long. What can we do to make this happen? And what can we do when our plants aren't looking their best? The first question we need to ask ourselves is why our surfinias, petunias, or supertunias are in such poor condition. And there could be several reasons... Firstly, a lot depends on the variety. Some petunias, by their very nature, bloom less profusely and have a more dwarf habit than, for example, Supertunias, which grow very quickly. You can try to find out exactly what plants you have and see how much they grow and, therefore, how abundantly they can bloom. Secondly, watering is extremely important. It should be neither too little nor too much. Insufficient watering and drying out of the plants causes them to lose their leaves, reveal bare stems, often with a slight purple tint, and, of course, they don't produce many flowers. In such cases, we need to ensure more regular watering, even twice a day during the hottest and dryest periods, and when our plants are growing in small containers. On the other hand, petunias, including Surfinus, are sensitive to overwatering; some varieties can be infected by fungal diseases. The worst-case scenario is when the pots they are growing in lack drainage holes at the bottom, excess water doesn't drain away, and the plants become waterlogged. Root rot often occurs, and petunias completely wither. Another reason for poor flowering in surfinias, supertunias, and other petunias is insufficient nutrients. These plants require frequent fertilization, especially if they have already grown considerably or are growing in relatively small pots. If fewer and more colorful flowers appear, it's a sign to increase the frequency of fertilization. We also increase this frequency during rainy weather or frequent watering, as water also leaches nutrients from the soil. It's also very important to check for pests. In gardens, surfinias, other petunias, and supertunias are sometimes attacked by slugs. Furthermore, aphids can appear everywhere, including on balconies. If you notice them, the first symptom is the appearance of small white exoskeletons, which should be eradicated as soon as possible. The same applies to other pests. Aphid feeding not only weakens plants but also causes them to become sticky with the honeydew of these pests, increasing the risk of fungal diseases. Furthermore, these pests also transmit viral diseases that can infect our plants. Their presence can definitely impact petunia blooms, so it's worth monitoring them regularly and, if you notice signs of pest feeding, get rid of them as soon as possible. For example, you can spray aphids with a ready-to-use, natural spray. Its composition is based on natural saffron oil. It works mechanically, immobilizing the pests and cutting them off from the air, and can be used not only to control aphids but also other pests on various plants in the garden and home, including spider mites, greenhouse whiteflies, lungworts, thrips, cupids, and caterpillar larvae and young stages. This type of product does not cause negative effects on the sprayed plants and does not lead to the development of resistant pest populations. Just remember that, as a contact-acting product, it must be precisely dosed onto the affected plant parts to cover the pests. Avoid spraying flowers, especially surfinias and other petunias. An aphid spray based on saffron milk thistle oil can be applied in any quantity during the season... And if we take care of all these things, provide our plants with the right growing conditions, care for them, and nurture them, they will surely be delightful and blooming profusely.
