[SeMoCA Lacquerware] 10. Making Tongyeong Mother-of-Pearl Lacquerware | Jang Cheol-yeong (Holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Master of Mother-of-Pearl Lacquerware) Mother-of-Pearl Lacquerware Crafting in Tongyeong This video is the result of research conducted as part of the Korea-Japan International Lacquerware Project in 2025. It is a related series to the Craft Material Documentation Project conducted from 2020 to 2021. The tenth installment is ‘Making Tongyeong Mother-of-Pearl Lacquerware.’ During the late Joseon Dynasty, Tongyeong gained renown as a center for mother-of-pearl lacquerware production, centered around the Samdo Naval Command Headquarters. To this day, artisans who pass down the techniques of mother-of-pearl lacquerware are actively working in Tongyeong. This video documents the production process of mother-of-pearl lacquerware by Master Jang Cheol-yeong, a holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Master of Mother-of-Pearl Lacquerware.
