[SeMoCA Lacquerware] 9. Production of Namwon Fire-Lacquer Woodenware | Yang Jae-kyung (Holder of Jeonbuk Intangible Cultural Heritage, Master Lacquerware Craftsman) Fire-Lacquer (Hwachil) Lacquerware Crafting in Namwon This video is a research result of the Korea-Japan International Lacquer Project conducted in 2025. It is a related series to the Craft Material Documentation Project conducted from 2020 to 2021. The ninth installment is ‘Production of Namwon Fire-Lacquer Woodenware.’ ‘Hwachil’ is a traditional technique that involves applying heat to lacquer trees, from which lacquer sap has been harvested between June and September, to extract the remaining sap. This technique has been passed down in the Jirisan Mountain region, including Namwon in Jeollabuk-do and Hamyang in Gyeongsangnam-do. Fire-Lacquer woodenware is known to have originated from the production of alms bowls utilizing fire-lacquer at Silsangsa Temple in Namwon. This video documents the entire process, from the extraction of lacquer to the production of woodenware using it.
