9 Days in High Wilderness — It Didn’t Come Easy | Trout Fishing Catch and Cook
9 days deep in the wilderness where my son Jordan, Ollie, and I push into a high mountain lake, backpacking with only what we can carry, fishing for trout and cooking what we catch. We head into remote country where rivers, creeks, and alpine water cut through steep terrain and thick forest. Camping beside a clear lake with views of surrounding peaks, settling into the rhythm of life out here. Some days the catching comes fast. Other days we work for every strike, watching the water and adjusting with each cast. Rainbow trout are landed over the course of the adventure, each one earned through time, patience, and persistence. Back in camp, the reward unfolds. The wild fish go straight into the cook pot — simple meals cooked in the open air and eating them beside the water where they were caught. From fried fillets to battered fish and chips, each meal marks the end of a day spent working for it. This is bear country. Sign is present, and food is handled carefully. Wildlife moves through when it wants, adding to the feeling of being out in a place that doesn’t belong to us. Weather shifts as the days go on. Storms pass through at times, but the routine holds — walking, working the water, and preparing meals to eat. Evenings settle in beside the fire. The light drops behind the peaks, the water goes still, and everything slows down. Ollie moves, and time stretches out in a way it only does out here. Moving through this country with my son adds something more — shared days on the water, quiet stretches between casts, and the kind of moments that stay with you long after the trip ends. This is not just about catching fish. It’s about living out here — carrying what you need, finding water, earning a meal, and settling into a slower pace in the mountains. If you enjoy time in the backcountry, good food after long days on foot, you’ll feel right at home on this one. SUBSCRIBE AND WATCH Subscribe to my Fike and Hish YouTube channel.
