13 Days in the Heart of Wilderness — Deep Into It | Trout Fishing Catch and Cook

EVERY MILE. EVERY FISH. EVERY MEAL—EARNED. Deep in grizzly country where we push into wilderness alpine lakes, carrying only what we need, fishing for trout and cooking what we catch. Eric, Kyle, the dogs, and I push into country where the terrain is rough, the lakes are quiet, and every remote lake holds the possibility of a meal. We work through forests with no trails and into high mountain basins, backpacking into clear lakes and setting up camp, settling into the rhythm of life out here. Some days the casting comes easy. Other days we work for every strike, watching for movement below the surface. Cutthroat, brook, and grayling come to hand over the course of the adventure, each one earned through time, patience, and persistence, especially when using the fly. While backcountry camping, the reward unfolds. The fish go straight into the fry pot — beer-battered fillets, crispy nuggets, and simple meals we cook in the open air and eat them against some of the most scenic backdrops. Evenings slow down beside the flames, with stories, quiet laughter, and the dogs playing in the meadows as the light fades off the mountains. This country reminds us we’re not alone. Grizzly and black bear presence, and unexpected encounters add a constant edge to the experience. Mountain goats wander through without concern, and every sound in the woods carries weight. Weather moves in and out, one day holding us under a tarp, the next opening into clear skies and long views across untouched terrain. Through it all, we continue moving, working the water, preparing meals, and living day by day out here. This is not just about catching fish. It’s about the full experience of being out here — working with the landscape, earning a meal, and settling into a life shaped by water, fire, and wild ground.
