7 Days Surrounded by Wilderness — It Took Time | Trout Fishing Catch and Cook
EVERY MILE EARNED. EVERY FISH CAUGHT. EVERY MEAL SHARED. Chapter 2 -- PLAYING IN GRIZZLY COUNTRY In this chapter we push deeper into bear country on a week-long backpack trip through remote lakes and forests. With packs on our backs and fishing gear in hand, Eric, Kyle, Ollie, Samson, and I settle into life beside some very pretty lakes and begin exploring the area both on trail and off in search of trout. Some hikes are tough, but the reward waiting at the water usually makes it worthwhile. Over the course of this adventure we explore four different alpine lakes, fishing for cutthroat, brook, and grayling. From fly fishing and sight fishing to spinning a lucky lure, the splash of a strike and the shout of “fish on!” echo across these quiet waters. Some days the fish cooperate, some days they make us work for them — and occasionally someone suggests we might need a bigger net. Back at camp Kyle — my gear dude and food guy — keeps us eating like kings with homemade freeze-dried backpacking meals. Evenings are spent around the fire telling fisherman’s stories (some true), laughing a lot, and talking about the day while the dogs frolic in the meadow. And of course we cook what we catch. Fresh fillets go straight into the frying pot for beer-battered fish, tempura trout, fish and chips, and crispy nuggets of goodness — boneless skinless fish puddle-fried Dave Rock style. Rain keeps us under the tarp one day, and fresh bear scats reminds us we are sharing this rugged country with both grizzly and black bears. That’s simply part of being out here — it adds a little extra excitement to our adventures. From forest camps to great fishing days and fireside meals, this chapter captures the fun, friendship, and experience of spending time deep in the mountains doing what we love — catching fish, cooking them up, and enjoying life in wild country. That's because the camera is pointed the other direction. Behind it is a small film production with one crew member, a lot of gear, and a dog that helps between naps and fetching sticks. He's already demanding his own trailer. Behind the scenes there’s planning, logistics, filming, editing, and hauling an unreasonable amount of equipment into remote places. Income from this platform is basically starving actor money, so support helps offset the cost of producing these films and keeping Ollie outfitted, camera ready, and not missing his snacks. Some lakes handle fame better than others. To avoid sudden celebrity status, locations are not named in the videos or descriptions, mostly to keep them from showing up with agents. To those brave and generous souls who willingly help keep this little operation going, the keys to the locations and trip logistics are happily given. For the brave choosing to go, Jesus forgives. Falling trees, rocks, predators, and the elements do not.
