One in 7,000 children is born with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), one of the most common neuromuscular diseases in children. Lucien was three months old when he was diagnosed with SMA in its most severe form. This rare genetic disease attacks the nerve cells that control the muscles. Doctors told his parents that Lucien only had a few months to live. Lucien died at the age of seven months. To improve care, the Grand Est and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regions are testing a newborn screening program.
