Two surgeons working in the interior of Brazil have become popular on social media by showing that, sometimes, payment for their services can take quite unusual forms. When the goal is to help those most in need, they often accept expressions of gratitude in the form of vegetables, fruits, eggs, and even chickens. The doctors' lighthearted and moving videos have won over thousands of people. About six years ago, Tiago Stanley, originally from the interior of Minas Gerais and trained in the capital, decided to return to his roots to practice his profession closer to the community. In 2019, during the Brumadinho tragedy, located about 70 kilometers from Belo Horizonte, a mudslide caused by the collapse of a tailings dam killed 272 people. At the time, the orthopedist was on duty at the local health unit. The experience deeply affected him and led him to decide that Brumadinho would be his new home, where he moved with his family. Sônia Medeiros, a domestic worker, highlights the special way Tiago treats his patients. She has already undergone surgery on both knees by the doctor and continues to receive regular follow-up care. Whenever she has an appointment, she takes the opportunity to show her gratitude in a very particular way. The consultation room sometimes resembles a market stall. The doctor has received offerings such as cheese, cassava, and even chickens. All these gifts go home, where they delight his three children. A fourth child is on the way. His wife, Letícia Stanley, who is also a doctor, was surprised when the first offers began to arrive, but today she recognizes that the affection of the rural populations is unique. After sharing these moments on social media, Tiago discovered that he wasn't the only one experiencing similar situations. Raulino Brasil, a dental surgeon specializing in maxillofacial surgery, practices in Araranguá, in the interior of Santa Catarina, and also has many remarkable stories. One of the patients was Rosa Maria Emerim, 75, who had lived with a hemangioma on her face since childhood, a benign tumor caused by an abnormal accumulation of blood vessels. The corrective surgery she needed cost around 9,600 euros, an impossible amount for her financial situation. That's when she met Raulino, who quickly decided to help her. The surgeon says he has received grapes, chickens, and even goats as a token of gratitude.
