He was elected Bishop of Rome at a time of great theological controversy in the Catholic Church. Nestorius, the Patriarch of Constantinople, preached that the Blessed Virgin Mary gave birth only to the human nature of Christ and therefore should not be called 'Mother of God' (Theotokos). But Pope Celestine, who strongly opposed this, convened the famous Council of Ephesus in A.D. 431. With the help of Saint Cyril of Alexandria, they rejected the Nestorian heresies and officially declared that the Blessed Virgin Mary was truly the "Mother of God". He was the first to send Saint Palladius and then Saint Patrick to Ireland to spread the Gospel. Pope Celestine, who was very careful to preserve the rituals and fidelity of the Church, On July 27, 432, he departed for eternal rest.
