The Song of the Thatched Cottage Broken by the Autumn Wind By Du Fu In August, the autumn wind came howling, Sweeping away the thatch from my roof. The scattered straw flew across the river, Some was caught in the treetops above, Some drifted down into the ponds below. The village children saw I was old and weak, And took the straw before my very eyes. Carrying it away into the bamboo grove, My voice grew dry, but I could not catch them. I leaned on my staff and sighed alone. Soon the wind was gone and dark clouds gathered, The autumn sky faded into dusk. My old quilt felt cold as iron, The child had worn and torn it in his sleep. Rain leaked through, leaving no dry place, Endless rain fell like tangled threads. Since the years of chaos, sleep has been rare; How can this cold, wet night ever end? Oh, if there were ten thousand halls one day, To shelter all the poor beneath the sky, Standing firm through every storm and rain, Like mountains rising high. Alas... When will I see such homes appear? A dream made real before mankind.
