9 Days Solo in the Wilderness — Had to Earn Every Bit of It | Trout Fishing Catch and Cook
Nine days alone in the wilderness with Ollie beside me and everything we needed carried on our backs. The route led through remote mountain country where granite, timber, snow patches, and cold water shaped the days and set the pace. One lake led to another as we moved through high country that felt a long way from roads and a longer way from crowds. The trip offered a reminder early on that the wilderness always gets the final say. On the second day a tree came down through the tent while we were still inside. Nobody was hurt, but it was a good reminder that out here plans only hold together until the mountains decide otherwise. The days settled back into a familiar rhythm after that. Walk. Fish. Cook. Sleep. Repeat. Most of the time was spent working clear water for trout, moving between shorelines, structure, drop-offs, and cruising fish while letting the conditions decide what came next. The finest fish of the trip was a thick brown trout measuring twenty inches and weighing two and a half pounds. Moments like that are part of what keeps people returning to mountain lakes year after year. Not every day produced fish. Not every cast deserved one. But enough came together to keep things interesting and occasionally keep supper from coming out of a freeze-dried pouch. When the catch lined up, meals followed. Fresh trout cooked beside the same water they came from somehow always tasted better after a long day of backpacking, fishing, camping, cooking, and eating outdoors. Ollie shared every mile of the journey. Every climb. Every campsite. Every quiet evening beside the water. He watched the shoreline while I watched the water, and together we moved through country that asked for effort and rewarded patience. The waterfall never stopped talking. Wind moved through the timber. Weather crossed the mountains overhead. The days moved slowly in the best possible way. This is nine days of wilderness backpacking, trout fishing, catch and cook meals, camping, mountain lakes, waterfalls, and life lived one camp at a time. Nothing was given.
