In this class, I'll teach you 10 exercises to correct kyphosis or hunchback and improve the alignment of your shoulders and thoracic spine with exercises using the super light resistance elastic band (I'll leave the link to the super band at the end). Rounded shoulders have many negative consequences for joints, muscles, and bones. These include neck pain, numb hands, spasms, tension migraines, and an increased risk of fracture if you have low bone mineral density or osteoporosis. You've probably already tried stretching and other exercises, which are also very important. However, with these 10 exercises, we'll do gentle, progressive functional strengthening training to improve poor shoulder and back posture. We start with a chair so you can better position your pelvis from a neutral position, and then we incorporate squats and other hip rotation and acceleration exercises to train not only your shoulders but your entire posterior chain. The exercises can be performed by number of repetitions (10 to 15 repetitions) or by time (45 seconds to 1 minute of the exercises, followed by 20 seconds of rest). Biomechanically speaking, flexed shoulder postures have a mechanical consequence known as upper crossed syndrome. This consists of weakness in the posterior muscles of the shoulders and thoracic back, while the anterior muscles shorten and generate contractures that limit the mobility of your back and arms, compressing the vertebral discs and decreasing lung capacity. The key to noticing changes is consistency. Doing the exercises every day if necessary is a very complete, low-impact routine that won't overload the body. You can also practice them two or three times a week and alternate them with other postural workouts.
