Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa. Often mentioned alongside Lagos in Nigeria and Johannesburg in South Africa, it has at times been labeled as one of the “world’s most dangerous cities.” One of the biggest reasons behind this reputation is its extreme wealth gap—among the worst in the world. While foreign nationals and the wealthy live in upscale neighborhoods, roughly one in three of Nairobi’s nearly 6 million residents lives in sprawling informal settlements, or slums. Two completely different worlds coexist within the same city: modern skyscrapers and luxury malls just miles away from areas struggling with poverty, unemployment, and insecurity. The Embassy of Japan in Kenya even publishes a safety map, marking certain areas as “off-limits” without armed police escort. In this video, I explore a place once considered “the most dangerous area in Nairobi,” known for frequent terror attacks in the past. Walking through its streets, I document the reality of life here—capturing both the face of a rapidly developing African metropolis and the harsh inequalities that continue to shape it. #nairobi #kenya #nairobivlog
