Over the centuries, this spirituality flourished in the Church, inspiring saints such as Saint Teresa of Jesus, Saint John of the Cross, and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. According to Carmelite tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock and gave him the Scapular of Carmel, a sign of consecration, maternal protection, and commitment to living the Gospel faithfully.
