Father Françoá Costa reacted strongly to the declaration of his excommunication by the Archdiocese of Brasília. In a video statement, the priest questioned the legal validity of the sanction and pointed to what he called "ideological punishment." To highlight a supposed disproportionality in Cardinal Dom Paulo Cezar Costa's decision, the priest listed by name priests from the Federal District investigated and convicted for serious scandals of sexual abuse, including crimes against minors and sexual harassment. According to Françoá, the harshest sanctions should focus on moral deviations and heinous crimes, claiming that he was expelled "only for being Catholic" and defending the theological tradition of the Church.
