I went to iFood's headquarters in Osasco to interview Raphael Bozza, the company's VP of People, and my professor of people management and leadership. It was a conversation I'd wanted to have for a long time, because iFood is, for me, the company I admire most in terms of culture. And the challenge here was to bring all of that to the reality of someone who has five, eight, or ten employees in a restaurant. We talked about why you should conduct interviews even without an open position, what Diego Barreto does when hiring someone for a leadership role, how to build a culture from scratch when the operation is already running smoothly, how to give feedback without destroying relationships with the team, and what to do when people stay for two months and leave. Spoiler alert: Raphael directly states that the problem, most of the time, isn't the person. We also discussed the application of Pareto's principle to people management: 20% of problems generating 80% of turnover. And how to identify those 20% in your restaurant.
