ARTILLERY in the ENGLISH CIVIL WAR - the cannons of death!

The English Civil Wars between King Charles I and parliament saw the mass use of: muskets, pikes, cavalry and the kings of the battlefield - cannon. Like all arms at the beginning of the war, artillery was of an amateur nature and consisted of a huge variety of cannon, mortars, calibres, names and ammunition. But as the war progressed: knowledge, experience and numbers increased. By the end of the conflict, huge numbers of cannons were being hauled around by thousands of horses. These huge artillery trains would wreak havoc on enemy armies, soldiers, horses, city walls and civilians. So let's see how cannon were made, who made them, how they were transported, how they were manned, loaded and above all...fired! I am indebted to the wonderful work 'Furie of the Ordnance,' by Stephen Bull.
