His autocratic belief in the divine right of kings, coupled with his naive and arrogant decision-making, alienated both his Parliament and the various religious factions across England, Scotland, and Ireland. Controversial religious reforms were tremendously unpopular, culminating in the king's disastrous attempt to arrest MPs and the eventual declaration of war. The conflict engulfed all three kingdoms, pitting "Roundheads" against "Cavaliers" in a struggle for control over the church and state.
