The Battle of the Ancre: The Somme’s Final Assault (No AI)

Shout-out to the A Family History of… podcast for supporting this video. In their latest episode, they tell the moving story of the Attenborough brothers. Three went to war, and two were killed on the Somme just twelve days apart. Watch here:    • Three brothers marched to war | A Family H...   Ask somebody in the street today about the Battle of the Somme and one date inevitably comes up: 1st July 1916. And for good reason. It was the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army, with nearly 60,000 casualties and more than 19,000 dead. But the Somme was not a one-day battle. The fighting continued for another four months and by November the battlefield had become a hellish wasteland of mud, shell holes and unburied dead. Yet still the attacks went on. With all sides on the verge of total exhaustion, the British would launch one final major assault in the hope of making one final advance before winter closed in. In this video, with the help of rare battlefield footage filmed at the time, we're going to explore that much-overlooked final phase of the Somme, in which exhausted men fought in horrific conditions to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat.
