Yirgacheffe: Buunni Coffee Origins

“I would like to tell people that coffee should not only be something they drink. I would encourage them to come and see where coffee comes from and how it is prepared." — Mulugeta Kebede, Konga Kebele, Yirgacheffe Woreda, Gedeo Zone, SNNPR, Ethiopia Origin Story:  Mulugeta Kebede is a smallholder farmer from Konga Kebele, a renowned coffee-producing village located in the Yirgacheffe Woreda of the Gedeo Zone, in Ethiopia's Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR). He first began farming on the land he inherited from his family, and now he has about 6.8 hectares of land. The coffee trees in Mulugeta’s farm grow together in harmony with native trees. These trees serve many purposes: improving coffee quality, providing shade, and contributing to compost. The native trees live together with the coffee plants in perfect balance. Their leaves also serve as natural fertilizer, help prevent drought, and even serve as food and security.   “Coffee gives me great joy,” says Mulugeta. Coffee is not only important for him personally, but also contributes significantly to the country’s economy. Since he started working in this field, they have been able to produce better yields than his forefathers did. Now they produce around 2.2 tons, whereas before it was only about 0.6 metric tonnes per hectare. And now, because he has improved his farming practices, coffee farming has become profitable for him, and he’s seeing positive results. A message from Mulugeta to our community:   “I would like to tell people that coffee should not only be something they drink. I would encourage them to come and see where coffee comes from and how it is prepared. Come and connect with the farmer on his farm, witness the work behind, and enjoy a freshly brewed cup from the farmer’s home. That’s my message."
