Austria has been demonstrating for years what Germany is still debating: sharing solar power with neighbors, selling it within the community, or even passing on one's own solar energy to children in the city. In Austria, energy sharing is already common practice—with nearly 12,000 energy communities, established market processes, and a smart meter rollout of around 95 percent. In Germany, energy sharing has been legally possible since June, but according to Vera Immitzer, it has primarily implemented what was already required by EU regulations. Genuine incentives are lacking.
