Das Ende des Erdöls beginnt jetzt - Dirk Specht

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has suddenly exposed the world's dependence on fossil fuels – and simultaneously revealed who is prepared and who is not. Dirk Specht, a supervisory board member and entrepreneur in the energy sector, experienced the crisis firsthand during a two-month trip to Asia. His conclusion: While India plans to ban gas stoves in eight months, Indonesia is phasing out diesel generators, and Sri Lanka is bringing forward its solar expansion plan by four years, Germany's response – a fuel discount – goes directly to the oil companies. China has been strategically managing the dilemma of fossil fuel dependence for decades, particularly with regard to the Strait of Malacca. Since then, its five-year plans have been in place, exceeding their targets, and since January, it has been legally mandated that coal-fired power plants are reserve capacity; not a single new one is economically viable. The energy transition there is not a political promise – it is industrial policy with an implementation plan. China has been strategically managing the dilemma of fossil fuel dependence for decades, including with regard to the Strait of Malacca. In Germany, however, a clever network of permitting hurdles, strengthened grid operators, and methodologically questionable system cost calculations is hindering the expansion of renewable energy – with foreseeable consequences for electricity prices, competitiveness, and security of supply. Dirk explains what's behind Minister Reiche's 36-billion-euro calculation and what consumers and businesses should do now, regardless of what politicians decide.
