Helsby Hill Circular Walk: Incredible Views, Woodland Trails & Quarry Landscapes

Join me on a gorgeous circular route around Helsby Hill, one of Cheshire’s best-loved landmarks. This walk has everything — sweeping summit views, peaceful woodland trails, sandstone quarries, and even a mysterious lost footpath across the marshes! I start from Hill Road North at Harmers Wood, climbing through the trees and old quarry faces up towards the summit of Helsby Hill. At the top, the views open dramatically across the River Mersey, Liverpool, and even Liverpool Cathedral standing clear on the skyline. Looking down from the sandstone edge, Helsby village sits far below. From the summit we follow the path beneath the ridge with more stunning views before descending towards Old Chester Road. The route takes us past St Paul’s Church, along Chester Road, and through the heart of the village — including a look at The Railway Inn, whose beer garden comes with one of the best views around. We attempt to follow the footpath near Smithy Close / Lordship Lane which should cross the M56 towards the marshes, but the path simply vanishes! After retracing the route back into the village, we continue along Chester Road before heading left up Robin Hood Lane and looping around to explore the beautiful, atmospheric Helsby Quarry. From there, the route climbs back via Alvanley Road and Hill Road South, following the wooded tracks that lead once again towards the heights of Helsby Hill, before returning to our starting point on Hill Road North. 📍 Route: Harmers Wood → Helsby Hill → Old Chester Road → St Paul’s → Chester Road → Smithy Close (lost footpath) → Robin Hood Lane → Helsby Quarry → Alvanley Road → Hill Road South → Hill Road North Map: https://gb.mapometer.com/walking/rout... https://maps.app.goo.gl/1rV3iosNcrS8C... 📏 Distance: 3.3 miles (4.3 miles with a misadventure)🎥 Filmed for Run Adventurer, exploring fresh routes and hidden gems across Cheshire If you enjoy scenic hill walks, woodland adventures, and discovering unusual local history, you’ll love this one.👉 Don’t forget to like, comment and subscribe for more weekly adventures.
