Bolivia is sitting on a gold mine that's being siphoned off through the back door. Between 40 and 50 tons of the metal are extracted each year, but official records only report 20 to 40 tons. The millions of dollars difference disappears into the informal economy and smuggling. According to data, nearly 80% of gold mining operates outside the law: illegal dredges in the rivers of La Paz and Beni, tons of mercury entering the country, and gold leaving via clandestine routes. A report by the Milenio Foundation estimates that the illegal and informal business moves some $4 billion a year, while the State loses royalties and the rivers are polluted. The underreporting is so severe that the massive import of mercury doesn't match the declared production.
