On day 6 of my hike, I start in Saverne and barely make any progress. Every few meters, one sight follows another: Hohbarr Castle (Château du Haute-Barr), Gross-Geroldseck, Klein-Geroldseck, Brotschberg Tower, Dabo Rock (Rocher de Dabo), and so on and so forth... Alsace is simply a string of pearls of sights. The following night, however, turns out to be a bit of a challenge, as I had the stupid idea of ​​spending the night at a barbecue hut on a Saturday evening during the summer holidays. If you want a peaceful night's sleep, don't do that. The seventh day took me over the Schneeberg and then past the Nideck Castle ruins and the 25-meter-high Nideck Waterfall (Cascade du Nideck). I swapped my originally planned sleeping spot, the Porte de Pierre, for the Mutzig Rock (Rocher de Mutzig). Given the view, it was definitely the right choice. The 400-kilometer hike through the Vosges Mountains in Alsace takes you through a wonderfully diverse landscape, picturesque settlements, and a rich history. The GR 53 (Grande Traversée des Vosges), a classic hiking trail frequently used for this route, is now part of the Hexatrek, a long-distance trail over 3,000 km long through France that is poised to become the European counterpart of the American Pacific Crest Trail.
