NANTLLE RIDGE Circular Walk From RHYD DDU | Walk Wales

The Nantlle ridge circular walk in Snowdonia, Wales starts out from a free parking layby on the B4418 at Rhyd Ddu. There are very few people on the spectacular Nantlle ridge walk compared to its imposing neighbour Snowdon. The type of walk I tend to enjoy the most and indeed this one did not disappoint! This Nantlle ridge circular walk takes in 4 summits on the ridge. The hike to the first summit Y Garn is probably the hardest bit of the hike in terms of steep ascent and certainly for prolonged ascent. You can see the imposing climb from the start. It's one that is as steep as it looks looking from afar. Looking behind you on the ascent gives you terrific views into Snowdon. Once you reach the summit you get stunning panoramic views over to Anglesey, Snowdon and glimpses of Cardigan Bay and more. After taking in the views it's bare left along the path and you can see the rather daunting and unmistakable summit which is Mynydd Drws-y-coed. From afar the scramble looks like it's going to be rather exposed and tricky but once on the scramble itself it proves to be a lot easier than it looks. It still has some exposure but not the exposure you think it's going to be from afar. Once you have got to the top of the scramble the actual summit is a couple hundred metres ahead and unmarked. You know you have reached the summit after going over a stile. There the summit is just to your right. The views at this point open up more expansive views towards Cardigan Bay as well as more open views to the coast line. A fantastic array of views on the full 360 from this summit. Then it's on to the third summit Trum y Ddysgi by following the path along the ridge. There is nothing too difficult about this section of the walk although there is a bit of exposure down to the left towards the Beddgelert forest and lots of exposure to the right if you decide to wander too close the edge, which is not required. The summit of Trum y Ddysgi is again unmarked but gives you a different view of the coast. The panoramic view from here gives you views towards Angelsey, the ridge you have just walked across with Snowdon in the background, more expansive views towards Cardigan Bay and your fourth summit with the obelisk being Mynydd Tal-y-mignedd. Another fabulous set of 360 degree views to soak up. To get to the fourth summit it's case of the following the ridge round whilst taking in the jaw dropping expansive views in all directions. Then bare right and take the path down towards Mynydd Tal-y-mignedd. On the path down you need to negotiate a bit of exposure as the path drops away to the left. It just need careful footing for only a short distance. The bad news is you need to negotiate it again on your return journey because the final summit on this hike is an out and back. Once you have got through this little tricky section it's a straight walk up to the summit of Mynydd Tal-y-mignedd marked by a obelisk. The obelisk was erected on this summit to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The panoramic view from here gives you stunning panoramic views towards Angelsey, Cardigan Bay plus more. It's then a case of retrace you steps back the way you came and go through the tricky exposed section. Once at the top of the hill take the path to the right which takes you down the hill at the other side. The walk down off this side of the hill gives you epic views out to Cardigan Bay and views towards Snowdon with the Beddgelert forest in the foreground. It's a real feast for the eyes. At the bottom of the steeper section of the hill there is a bit of an exposed section of the path to negotiate but it's only very short. Once off the hill it's case of bare left to take the path through the Beddgelert forest. When you exit the forest you will soon see views into the parking area below. You also get an added bonus of passing a waterfall on the way back to the car. All in all it's the best hike I have done in North Wales and one I'd thoroughly recommend. I hope to do the full ridge walk one day and get some form of transportation back to the start. A great few hours out! Route taken https://explore.osmaps.com/route/3321...
